Martina Nehrling, “Saudade”

On View February 15th – March 24th, 2018

Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present Saudade, Martina Nehrling’s second solo show with the gallery. Saudade is a Portuguese term that defies direct translation, but Martina Nehrling thinks the elusiveness of the word is best wrangled by Jasmine Garsd. She describes it as “a melancholy nostalgia for something that perhaps has not even happened. It often carries an assurance that this thing you feel nostalgic for will never happen again.” It’s an unexpected concept to associate with Nehrling’s unabashedly optimistic work characterized by highly saturated color, but in her latest work on view in Saudade she concentrates on the presence of absence.

Humble Iterations: small scale works at Markel Fine Arts, until 23/Dec

Sunday, December 13th, 2015

Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present Humble Iterations, an ambitious group show of small-scale artwork. This show consists of gallery artists and a few guest artists who, while using a variety of sizes in their practice, also create small versions of their signature styles. Small, in this case, is loosely defined as paintings and works on paper that are under 20 inches at the largest dimension. In creating these, the artists pare down their visual vocabulary to the most important marks or motifs.

Artists included are as follows: Ky Anderson, Diane Ayott, Lisa Breslow (whose Summer Lights is shown above courtesy of Kathryn Markel), Mary Didoardo, Laura Fayer, Elizabeth Gilfilen, Jeffrey Cortland Jones, Sydney Licht, Sara MacCulloch, Don Martiny, Martina Nehrling (whose work The Devil You Know is shown below courtesy of Kathryn Markel), Marilla Palmer, Nancy Rubens, Debra Smith, Josette Urso, Annie Wildey, and Tamar Zinn.
