Garvey|Simon presents Exploring Light by Bentley Meeker

Friday, March 1st, 2019

Garvey|Simon is pleased to present Exploring Light, a new series of illuminated, sculptural works by Bentley Meeker March 8th – 17th.

This new work is the result of Meeker’s observations and research into visible light and its impact on the human psyche.  The artist’s expertise comes from decades of experimentation, study and use of varying light frequencies via his studio practice, as well as his commercial career as a renown lighting designer.

Meeker’s work is primarily focused around the essence and exploration of light’s nature, its meaning to us, and the changes in our collective use of light. His mission is to create reactions and relationships between light sources and the human experience. Exploring Light consists of forty contemplative installations that create a unifying tableau and invite the viewer to immerse themselves in a collective perception. These meticulously constructed sculptures comment on the intersection of human culture and the natural world.

The exhibition will take place during Armory week at 517 W. 37th Street New York, NY 10018, a street level gallery space in the Hudson Yards district in close proximity to the fairs. The show will be open and on view Tuesday – Saturday, 11am-6pm, and by appointment. An artist talk will be held in the gallery on Saturday, March 16, at 1pm.

Garvey|Simon presents J Ivcevich: Trail of Mystics in collaboration with Creative Tech Week

Friday, May 11th, 2018

Garvey|Simon is pleased to present J Ivcevich: Trail of Mystics, an immersive, multimedia exhibition showcasing the artist’s most recent paintings, sculptures, ceramics and sound design. Trail of Mystics reaches across temporal, cultural, and technological boundaries to create an experience of timelessness and quietude. By converging these oppositional forces, Ivcevich excavates a space for the present.

Ivcevich points to the artifacts of global urban environments as the inspiration for Trail of Mystics. The painting, Mosaic Diptych, 2018, (pictured above) encapsulates his interest in time and meditation. Drawing from images of tattered street advertisements whose strata peek through one another, Ivcevich begins by manipulating his canvas’ surface with tie-dye and silkscreen techniques. The found imagery taken from the shredded advertisements is then put through a process of layering and compositional reduction, mimicking the accumulation of the source material and creating a pictorial historical document. The reductive quality of Ivcevich’s patterning lends a tranquility to the paintings. The work is at once old and new, chaotic and meditative.

Exhibition closes on June 9th.
