Susan Nelly curates Blooming Emotions at Rafael Gallery

Monday, October 2nd, 2017

Beatriz Elorza’s “Blooming Emotions” at the Rafael Gallery, is curated by Susan Nelly, and features two bodies of work by the Spanish artist. The abstract paintings are infused with the atmosphere and spirit of the two cities, New York and London, where the artist has lived and worked, and reflect, in vivid color and motion, her experience of their energies.

Elorza’s larger than life works present a wonderful conundrum, walking a tightrope between abstract and representational art, with the latter serving as a point of entry, inviting us to a deeper exploration of the emotional content. These compositions reference naturalist illustration in their focus on the subject and lack of fear of negative space, but the artist’s mark is pure New York School. Her works especially bring to mind the brightness and stripped-down clarity of the late paintings of Willem de Kooning. It is a wholly new synthesis of aesthetics that evokes an atmosphere of the wonder, infused with a sense of “deja vu.”

The exhibition is  is on view throughout the month of October. Opening reception with the artist October 3rd, 6pm – 8pm.

Anderson Contemporary & The Villa America Fine Art – present Anthony Haden-Guest – The Further Chronicles of the Now

Tuesday, May 9th, 2017

Anderson Contemporary and The Villa America Fine Art are thrilled to share The Further Chronicles of Now, a show of the ground-breaking cartoon work that Anthony Haden-Guest has been making over the last several years.  His targets are as various as the art world, our social disorders  (new & old) and the state/fate of the planet, so the work is content-driven but such formal elements as color and design are very much part of that content.

Haden-Guest mostly works in pen and ink on paper, but he likes to extend the possibilities of cartoon language through works in neon, collaborating with animators and with other media.

The exhibit runs from May 10th – June 10th.
