.

This month at Sarah Wiseman Gallery, we’ll be exhibiting new work by acclaimed landscape artist Emerson Mayes. In his new series, Emerson has created a number of works using oil on paper, which gives a softened, luminous line filled with light and movement. Much of his work is the result of an honest, emotional response to his surroundings, and his deep connection with his native Yorkshire, where almost all of his work is created.

Although he is best known for his landscape paintings, Emerson Mayes spent the majority of 2011 concentrating on drawing, and honing his skills as a printmaker. He spent a year studying the abundant wild-life and changing seasons at Fountains Abbey, Yorkshire which was historically also inspiration for JMW Turner. The result was a stunning series of dry-point etchings of British wild-life, which we exhibited at Sarah Wiseman Gallery last year.

He graduated from Leeds University in 1994 and has worked consistently since then, exhibiting all over the UK. His can be found in both public and private collections. Click here for more details.

‘Love your business? Love your email!’ is presented by Digital Dragonfly, AWAD’s favourite Technology Consultancy.

.

Whether you like it or not email is at the heart of every business these days. Developing good habits in managing your emails will make a huge difference in your productivity and business success. My top tips:

1. Don’t use a @yahoo, @hotmail, @gmail or any other free email account to run your business.

2. Keep personal and business emails separate.

3. Use your domain name for a custom business email account. For example f@digitaldragonfly.co.uk on my business cards and hello@digitaldragonfly.co.uk which I have on my website but they all feed into the same inbox.

4. Don’t have your email forwarded to, for example, your @hotmail account as you will end up replying to clients from the wrong account- it doesn’t look professional and you will have emails in different places.

5. Use Outlook to manage your emails. Even Mac users can benefit from Outlook for Mac which has better functionality for business use than Mac Mail. If you are on an old version of Office upgrade to Office 2010 (anything older than Office2007 this has to be a priority).

6. My recommendation would be to use a service like Office365 rather than managing mailboxes through your webhost. It will be more reliable and easier to sync and backup your data. Office365 also gives you the option to pay for Office2010 monthly on subscription.

7. Many people end of using one system for their email and another for calendar and a third for contacts. This is messy and makes it hard to backup and sync your data. It’s best to think of your email, calendar and contact data together and set up a system that allows you to sync, backup and manage these all together.

Need some help getting your email in tip top shape? Why not book in for a free 15-minute IT audit and let Digital Dragonfly advise you on the best setup for your business needs.

An article by Keren Lerner (pictured above), Top Left Design, AWAD’s favourite Website Design and Social Media Expert.

Social media is a great medium for all different types of business people but like all types of marketing, it needs to be done well. If you have signed up for an account with Twitter, LinkedIn or Facebook and you aren’t using them actively, then you can choose – remove your account, or jump in with both feet!

These tools are changing the way we communicate with people. Those who are using it understand why. Those who aren’t sometimes struggle to see the point. They think of it as a time suck – and say things like “If I want to speak to someone I can just pick up the phone.” Or “I don’t have time for that” or “I don’t have anything interesting to say.”

However, if you are reading this, even if you feel like those statements are true, there is a little voice inside of you that’s saying “there must be something to this”

So, I have a 3 step process that you can apply to each of the main platforms. Those main platforms are:

LinkedIn

Facebook

Twitter

And you don’t have to use them all! Just pick one that feels right for you if you want to focus on just one. Or do them all (I do!)

Step 1 – profile: It’s important to get this right. It’s the first step to making an impression.

On LinkedIn, make sure you have a picture of yourself, cropped, a headshot, so people can recognise you. This is the platform you could spend more time working on as this is what people judge you on. If someone Googles your name, they are likely to find your LinkedIn profile. So, put a couple of hours in and fill it in properly.

On Facebook, make sure you have a Business page, the kind people 2like”, and take note the new recent changes to the timeline format – which is great for art dealers and gallerists as you can put a really big picture up.

On Twitter, fill out your bio, use your own name and a twitter name, put in a picture of you.

Step 2: Engagement.

This is where you mix up the updating the status on various profiles and talking to people. It’s not a one way street, it’s a two way conversation. Each of the three has different ways to talk to people. On LinkedIn, you send messages. On Twitter, you send “@replies” and on Facebook – you can write on walls, “like” someone’s update or send messages. It’s worth getting to know how to speak to people on each. Remember if you want help, ask someone you know who is doing it a lot to show you, or come to one of our seminars.

Step 3 – Strategy

This is the last step. I would recommend looking at strategy when you have covered the basics and are used to using whichever tools you decide.

So, I wanted to give you one strategy tips for each – and remember I am doing a 2 hour Social Media Masterclass on the 27th June where I can go through this in more detail. http://awadmasterclassjune2012.eventbrite.com/

Some strategy tips – as a bonus

LinkedIn - Every time you meet someone – connect with them on LinkedIn – instead of a follow up email. This way you are making the most of the meeting, doing the follow up, and creating that constant thread between you.

Twitter - There are ways to organise the people you follow into “Twitter Lists”. By doing this, you can focus on one group of people at a time and make an effort to talk to and RT that group.

ArtHAUS is not just an exhibition but is also considered an immersive installation work in its own right. Through a fusion of fine art and interior design in an environmental setting, ArtHAUS is a surrealist take on the modern home. Incorporating five dynamic rooms through which visitors are invited to wander- including a living area, bedroom, dining room, kitchen and bathroom- The whole installation will also be viewable simultaneously, revealing the imaginative possibilities which have shaped the entire space. Click here for more information.
