As we head into August, AWAD is spotlighting a founding Member of our New York/Tri-State Chapter: Elizabeth Garvey, co-founder and director of Garvey|Simon. Read on to learn more about Elizabeth, as she tells us about her business and art world journey, the advantages of an “open by appointment” dealership, and the trouble of collecting art with a pet bird!
What is the name of your business, where are you located and when did you start?

What is your professional background?
Art dealer, curator and advisor
What inspired you to take the leap and start your own business?
I had been working for 10 years at a gallery – and was helping a few clients as an advisor (outside the scope of what the gallery was doing). When I got pregnant with my first child I decided I wanted to go into business for myself so I could be at home more. It all snowballed from there.
What does your business offer, in terms of goods and services?
We represent artists and offer / show new works from their studios and give some solo shows. I am also active on the Secondary Market – buying and selling for private collectors. I also curate group exhibitions (usually 3 a year) and work as a Private Art Advisor. Many hats worn!
What is your favorite part about being a Member of the Association of Women Art Dealers?
I like the community and possibilities of networking with other members. One of the largest sales of my career was made through at AWAD colleague.
What was a recent highlight for you in your work?
A recent highlight was closing my Chelsea Gallery (right before the pandemic) and working solo as a Private Dealer. My life is so much more flexible now that I don’t always need to be in one space Tuesdays-Saturdays. Being open by appointment has been life-changing!
If you could own any work of art, what would it be?
There really isn’t just “one” work per se. I am limited at home with what I can hang on the walls because of our pet bird – who lands on things. I would enjoy having more flexibility once he “flies the coop” and moves in with one of my kids!

Any fun summer plans, art-related or otherwise?
Just got back from a fun trip to Montreal and a stay at a wonderful Nordic Spa. We also went on a roadtrip to the Outer Banks of NC. Nothing too exotic!
