The Ivy Brown Gallery is thrilled to welcome the public back for in person visits. Due to the current circumstances they will be following the protocol set out by New York City. Appointments and masks are required, if you do not have a mask one will be provided for you..

The very aptly titled WE’RE HERE is a collection of ceramics, textiles, and drawings by Ak Jansen which comprise his first solo show in New York City. Born in the Netherlands, Jansen’s work occupies queerness on both poetic and political terms, and honors the queer community’s ethic of creative self-making. The work is about care and intimate relation; how they manifest, are compelled and sustained. The work is about the nature of bodies – in relation to each other but also to themselves; shifting, in flux, and at times against their own will – transforming. Clay, fiber, needle and thread – Jansen’s works are invested with the history of human hands that meet human needs.

Ak Jansen was born in Dongen, The Netherlands, in 1988. He studied at the Design Academy Eindhoven focusing on textile design, material culture, and techniques of fabrication. He works primarily with textile and clay, making art objects that explore different body shapes and hint at organic life – vessels as creatures, quilts that seem to be growing hair. Inspired by Bauhaus design as much as botany, and invested in the manifestations of queer identity, Ak’s work creates its own living world at the intersection of different art forms and creative practices. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
