AWAD is pleased to welcome Sascha Hackel from HackelBury Fine Art to the London Chapter of AWAD. As is our practice with new members, we asked Sascha to share some of her background and a bit about her business.

What is the name of your business and where are you located? when did you start?

Hackelbury Fine Art is located in London and we opened in 1998.

What is your professional background?

Following university in the United States, I moved to London in 1990 and worked at Hamiltons Gallery from 1990 until 1996. Marcus Bury and I founded HackelBury Fine Art in 1997 and opened the gallery space on Launceston Place in 1998. In the beginning, HackelBury exhibited primarily traditional photography. Over 22 years we have slowly shifted to exhibiting more conceptual work including contemporary photography, painting and drawings.

What inspired you to take the leap and start your own business?

I wanted to exhibit and support artists whose work inspired me and enjoy working with artists who push the boundaries of their medium to create meaningful and contemplative work.

What does your business offer, in terms of goods and services? 

We are a full-service gallery in central London exhibiting artists whose work we admire. We participate annually at art fairs in London, Paris, New York and Miami, have an active publishing programme and organise curatorial and patron visits to our Hampshire space. We collaborate with curators, private collectors, art fairs, writers, academic institutions and museums to develop partnerships and nurture long-term relationships. We engage with our clients’ interest in an artist and work closely with them to identify appropriate work for their budget and available space. Our commitment to inform the client about all aspects of the artists’ practice and their place in the market enables us to nurture loyal and enduring relationships. It is a point of pride that the client buys a work only when they are fully decided on the work. To aid the decision, we create mockups of the work on the client’s wall. We advise our clients on their collections. Once we have made a sale, we arrange framing, shipping and installation.

What excites you about having joined the Association of Women Art Dealers?

The potential for conversation and collaboration with like minded art dealers to exchange ideas and good practice. I also look forward to the opportunity to expand my network and horizons.

What brings you joy in your work? 

Happy artists, clients and co-workers. Increasing the representation of women artists to over a third of gallery artists with the intention of improving this representation. Developing good collaborations for our “In Conversations” between artists and curators. Beautiful presentations of spectacular work.

If you were a work of art, what piece would you be and why? 

Though I love photography, paintings and drawings, it would have to be something dynamic or kinetic. I can’t imagine being static. Maybe an Alexander Calder mobile would fit the brief.
