AWAD is pleased to welcome Agata Becker of AGART to AWAD’s London Chapter. As is our practice with new members, we asked Agata a few questions about her background and art business.
What is the name of your business, where are you located and when did you start?
The business’s name is AGART, we are located in London and began in 2022.
What is your professional background?
I am a UK-qualified lawyer and a gallerist.
What inspired you to take the leap and start your own business?
The thrill, excitement and pressure of building something from scratch. The entrepreneur route aligns well with my creative-streak. I am also someone who is very independently minded, so working in and for my own business definitely fits well with that trait.
What does your business offer in terms of goods and services?
My business holds a unique place in the art market as both a fully-regulated law firm specialising in art market issues and a contemporary art gallery that promotes a diverse array of female artistic voices.
What excites you about having joined the Association of Women Art Dealers?
Networking and the knowledge sharing opportunity within this brilliant network of like-minded women and business owners. I am excited about professional synergies that may arise within it and also to share and learn from our respective expertise and hopefully support one another’s goals, aspirations and missions.
What brings you joy in your work?
Being a full-time art worker effectively makes for an exciting career. There’s never a dull day whether you deal with quirky artists, or a stressful art fair set up, or being asked to draft a memo for a client on a tight deadline. But when you love what you do, it is always a pleasure, never a chore.
If you were a work of art what would you be and why?
I would be one of the large-scale Rothko paintings; akin to a meditative board, prompting the viewer to pause, contemplate and reflect. Despite all the simplicity, tap into one’s emotions but evoke a sense of tranquility and stillness.
