Beacon Gallery – Lori Mehta’s Float

by | May 17, 2021 | Blog post

Beacon Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by artist Lori Mehta, Float, running through June 13, 2021.

Float brings together a collection of Mehta’s most recent work. These pieces explore the artist’s studied investment in light, shape, and form through portraiture and moving and molded fabric. Working in oil, Mehta paints ordinary moments, yet her rendering allows the quotidian to become extraordinary. Mehta captures the gestural quality of moving people and objects through her attention, showcasing her subjects within line and shadows.

These works, all painted in 2020 and 2021, are a product of Mehta’s dedication to her artwork during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the artist, the themes explored: light, moments outdoors, fresh air, and powerful postures all were part of her personal escape (and a form of “art therapy”) from the difficulties of everyday reality.

Full of both bright and sensitive color, Beacon Gallery’s presentation of Float invites visitors to join Mehta in seeing surroundings as she does; finding beauty and hope in everyday moments and strength both within and through the arts.

Music by Fénéla Froissart, a native of Strasbourg, France, will be featured within the gallery space to accompany and complement Lori Mehta’s paintings. Froissart, who now lives in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region is the co-founder Compagnie Le Ver à Soie (Silkworm Company)is a composer and plays the cello, piano, amongst other instruments. The works selected for this exhibition are focused on the image, and tracks like “I Can Feel the Light” are light, airy, and bubbly, thereby speaking to Mehta’s imagery and offer another moment of evasion from the everyday.
