AWAD Member, Lydia Furuta of HG Fine Art, presents Geoffrey Johnson: New York, As I see It, an exhibition of 12 new paintings of New York. From uptown to downtown, subjects range from Fifth Ave and Central Park to Pete’s Tavern and McSorley’s Old Ale House. This recent body of work is inspired by the artist’s own personal experiences of the city evoking a sense of anonymity while inviting the viewer to bring their own narrative to each scene.
For the last several decades, Johnson, whose work has strong affinities with French impressionism, has drawn inspiration from the urban landscape. New York in particular has fascinated the artist for decades for its striking architecture and pedestrian culture. He paints the city using a limited color palette consisting mainly of neutral hues of beige and grays. Occasionally he will use some color, such as in the work, City in Color IX, but he doesn’t feel a special need for it. Johnson’s paintings are more about mood rather than the portrayal of a specific location and many of his works are composites – fictional compositions albeit highly suggestive of the city. Reviewers have noted the artist’s works for their elegance, timelessness and their unique ability to invite contemplation and introspection while capturing the magnitude of the city.
The exhibition is open 11:00 AM to 17:00 PM October 25 – November 10, 2025 at HG Fine Art, 3rd Floor, 764 Madison Ave, NY, NY 10065 York.
