Artistellar is pleased to present – Noshttps://artistellar.com/current-exhibitiontalgia through November 26th, 2021. Nostalgia is a sentimental longing or wistful affection for a period in the past. This three-person group show presents three women artists, Kidd Murray, Nina Baxter, and Louise Dee, exploring the diverse triggers of this human emotion.
Murray’s body of work in the show is about the complex relationship we have with nature. The artist playfully portrays exaggerated images of fruits and plants rendered in juicy bright colours containing sparkly diamond-like bits and pieces, which is the opposite of the freshness and realness of nature’s products—the artist comments on the artificiality of today’s world, thus making us nostalgic about the past. Artificial items produced by man have replaced natural elements.
Nina Baxter, on the contrary, narrates deep personal emotions from her life that evolve around the themes of love, intimacy, and self. Her paintings tell intimate stories that are, in fact, shared experiences of all of us. We all learn about life, love, and self, and along, we experience moments of euphoria and nostalgia that accompany us throughout our lives. Louise Dee’s work in the show, similarly to Baxter’s, focuses on shared experiences and emotions as humans. Her Public Pool series questions the importance of human connection and the nostalgia of luck of group gatherings we encountered during the global pandemic. How important is the human connection to us? In this body of work, Dee’s paintings show a group of people at swimming pools, swimming, floating, sunbathing, and playing games. However, some remain separate.
