As the summer starts to come to a close, we are heading to Nantucket, Massachusetts to meet AWAD Member Susan Hostetler, who runs Hostetler Gallery focusing on the figurative sculpture of her late husband David Hostetler. Read on to learn more about Susan, as she tells us about her business and art world journey, as well as how food and drink intersect with art dealing, and what to do on the island in the summertime.

What is the name of your business, where are you located and when did you start?

Hostetler Gallery, 42 Centre St. Nantucket, MA. The Gallery was founded in 1983 by my late husband David Hostetler.

What is your professional background?

I ran my own catering company in Boston when I met David Hostetler in 1985…it’s been an adventure hosting dinner parties and cooking together for collectors who become friends!

What inspired you to take the leap and start your own business?

I joined his gallery because I loved his artwork.

What does your business offer, in terms of goods and services?

I have a focus on wood and bronze sculpture by David Hostetler. We expanded our program 14 years ago to exhibit other artists. Now I exhibit paintings, photography and fine art prints, in addition to Hostetler sculptures.

What is your favorite part about being a Member of the Association of Women Art Dealers?

I enjoy the educational programing and being a part of a larger organization of women dealers.

What was a recent highlight for you in your work?

Discovering two new artists whose work is resonating with my clientele.

If you could own any work of art, what would it be?

Louise Bourgeois’s Maman… love at first sight.

What would you recommend to any art-lovers visiting your city this summer?

Immerse yourself in Nantucket’s galleries, enjoy my collection with a glass of distinctive wine or a freshly made coffee and hear my stories about my artists’ works.

Any fun summer plans, art-related or otherwise?

I like to get on the walking trails of Nantucket, our best kept secret… of course walking the beaches at the end of the day….
