Today is Earth Day (22 April 2024) and a great time to look at how art businesses around the world are taking action to tackle climate change. Fortunately, there’s a great source of inspiration and advice in the form of the Gallery Climate Coalition. The coalition’s wide variety of case studies shows how GCC members are taking meaningful steps to reduce their emissions, such as:
- Choosing sea-shipping over aviation to move art works
- Travelling to art fairs by train or road to reduce flights
- Making galleries and offices more energy efficient
Closer to home, AWAD Members and Friends have staged exhibitions that highlight the issues around climate change and biodiversity loss and AWAD’s commercial partners are also working to reduce their environmental impact. This year, we are delighted that our partner, the art and heritage insurer, Hallett Independent has achieved Active member status of the Global Climate Coalition. Hallett Independent said:
“We are pleased to announce Hallett Independent has successfully qualified as a 2023 Active Member with @galleryclimatecoalition! To achieve Active status we had to demonstrate that our organisation had implemented environmental sustainability best practice in line with GCC guidance.
Active Membership is not a certification of sustainability nor a claim that we are doing things perfectly or have all the answers – none of us are at this point. We’re all doing our best to assess, report and reduce our impact, setting targets in line with science, taking any actions we can and working out other solutions as we go.
