ShowUp, a nonprofit art gallery in Boston’s South end is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of artist and activist Caron Tabb‘s third solo exhibition, A Stone In my Shoe at ShowUp in Boston’s South End. Featuring a collection of multimedia fibre installations, the exhibition will be on view through June 1.
With a title evoking the sensation of a persistent yet often unnoticed discomfort, Tabb’s meditations on grief, memory, compassion, and resilience emphasize texture, layers, and intricate stitching. The artist conveys themes of grief and spirituality, responding to the passing of her mother and the current rise of antisemitism. Reflecting tension between old and new, the visible and invisible, A Stone in my Shoe visualizes internal struggles to encourage dialogue and empathy.
With regular open gallery hours and a series of artist talks and events planned throughout the run of the exhibition, A Stone in my Shoe offers opportunities for contemplation and community. On Wednesday May 21st at 6 pm, Award-winning author of international bestselling memoir My Salinger Year and the bestselling novel A Fortunate Age, Joanna Rakoff will sit down at the gallery with Tabb for a conversation. This event is open to the public and is supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

About the Artist
Caron Tabb was born in apartheid South Africa, raised on a farm in Israel from the age of eight, and has lived in the US for the last twenty years. Her conceptual mixed-media and installation pieces address issues of identity, social inequality, racial justice and feminism as seen through the lens of her deep Jewish identity and her personal history as an immigrant. Through her practice, she seeks out materials rife with metaphor such as Jewish ritualistic objects, fencing materials, and repurposed garments, then transforms them with yarn, thread, paint, cement, fire, and text with the goal of sparking dialogue, increasing empathy, and engaging people in difficult conversations. The resulting artworks are deeply personal reflections that serve as a voice and a vehicle for conversations about what it means to be a Jewish, American woman in today’s world.
