Who Are Your People? at Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art

The Elder Gallery of Contemporary is pleased to share the first gallery exhibition featuring Makayla Binter. Who Are Your People? investigates her community, her people, and their respective journeys which are often layered and complicated.Who Are Your People takes aim at the masks some are compelled to wear to meet expectations, or to measure up to some standard. In doing so, the wearer often loses sight of  her own reflection. Binter asks the question: “Who are you when you allow yourself to be imperfect?”

In her own work, Binter finds inspiration for this exhibition: “When I look in the mirror, I see an overlapping mirage of myself. They are not always perfectly lined up and often the reflection looking back at me isn’t whole. Each fragment combines into an image of myself. But, when you look at me, or you, or anyone else, what fragments do we miss? What are we ignoring about these multidimensional beings that we call people?

Constantly exploring and unafraid of the answers she may find, Makayla Binter is an artist who defines her voice and her point of view in every project she undertakes. In this exhibition, Binter dives into community and investigates how we create systems of support, who we seek out as peers and mentors, and what it means to find your people.

The exhibition is ongoing through December 4th, 2021.
